Herpetology in Alaska

Alaska famously has very few herps (a general term for reptiles and amphibians). Currently we have six known native amphibian species and two introduced ones, and no known populations of land reptiles. But are we maybe missing something?

We’re combining community outreach and eDNA to expand our knowledge of Alaska herps. In this pilot phase, we’re collecting sighting info on one specific group of animals: snakes! Snakes may have natural population in southeast Alaska, and might also be introduced via accidental transport by humans. We want to get a better picture of where snakes have been found in the state, and so we’re asking for help from the community! Have you seen a snake in Alaska? Please fill out our observation form!
